The Italian ship with immigrants leaves for Albania in the second test of the 5-year agreement!
An Italian navy ship carrying migrants was on its way to Albania on Wednesday to process asylum claims under a five-year deal to handle asylum claims outside the borders of the European Union, which has already hit a legal deadlock.
A spokesman for the Italian interior ministry confirmed that the ship Libra was heading to the Balkan country, but declined to say how many migrants were on board or when it would arrive.
Italian daily La Repubblica reported that of the 1,200 migrant arrivals on Italy's southernmost island of Lampedusa over the past two days, only eight male adults traveling without family met the criteria to be screened in Albania, including those coming from countries considered "safe" for repatriation.
The ship, which can carry 200 people in addition to the crew, is expected in the Albanian port of Shengjin early Friday with only 8 migrants on board.
This is only the second transfer since the two centers started operating last month. The first group of migrants had to be returned to Italy after a court in Rome ruled that their countries of origin - Bangladesh and Egypt - were not safe enough for them to return.
