US, towards government shutdown - Leaders fail to reach agreement at White House meeting
US President Donald Trump and his Democratic opponents made no significant progress during a White House meeting aimed at averting a government shutdown that could disrupt a wide range of services starting Wednesday.
Both sides left the meeting trading accusations and insisting that responsibility would fall on the other side if Congress fails to extend government funding beyond midnight Tuesday.
"I believe we are heading towards a shutdown," Vice President JD Vance declared.
Democrats say any extension deal must include preserving expiring health benefits, while Trump's Republicans insist that health care and government funding issues be handled separately. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said there are "very big differences" between the parties.
If Congress does not act, thousands of federal employees could be furloughed without pay, from NASA to national parks, and many services would be disrupted. Federal courts could close and grants to small businesses could be delayed.
Budget impasses have become commonplace in Washington over the past 15 years, often resolved at the last minute. But Trump's willingness to bypass or ignore spending bills passed by Congress has added a new dimension of uncertainty.
The US president has refused to spend billions of dollars approved by Congress and has threatened to extend the layoff of federal workers if Congress allows a government shutdown. So far, only a few agencies have released plans for how they would operate in the event of a shutdown.
