In 2023, about 16.2% of the EU population, or about 71.7 million people, were at risk of poverty, according to data from the European Statistics Agency. Meanwhile, in Albania, the number of individuals under this limit was estimated at around 545,400, a decrease of 5.4% compared to 2022, when this indicator was 576,316 individuals.
According to the data of 2023, the indicator of the risk of being poor in Albania is estimated at 19.7%. This indicator is estimated to be 3.5 percentage points higher than the average of the European Union, but about 3 points lower than in Latvia and Estonia, which lead Europe with the highest rate of risk of being poor.
In Latvia and Estonia, about 22.5% of the population was at risk of poverty, while the next countries with the highest value of relative poverty are Romania, Turkey, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Spain.
But in which European countries are people least at risk of poverty?
The lowest value in terms of the poverty indicator is recorded in the Czech Republic with 9.8%, Norway with 11.5%, Denmark with 11.8% and Ireland with 12%
What is noticed from the analyzed data is the narrowing of the gap between Albania and the European average, since in 2022 the difference was calculated at 4.1 percentage points.
