NATO countries adopt 5% target - Members commit to increasing defense spending
NATO countries approved an increase in military spending to 5% of GDP. Leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to collective defense in the event of an attack on a member state.
NATO leaders backed a major increase in defense spending and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting each other from attack after a brief summit, specially created for US President Donald Trump.
In a statement, the alliance adopted a higher defense spending target of 5% of GDP by 2035, a response to Trump's demand and the Russian threat.
"We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to collective defense, as defined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, that an attack on one is an attack on all," the statement said. The US president had sparked concerns a day earlier, saying there were "multiple definitions" of the clause. But just before the summit opened, Trump declared that "we are with them to the end," referring to NATO allies.
The 32-nation alliance heeded the US leader's call to reduce NATO's dependence on the US. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged that it was not easy for European countries and Canada to find the extra money, but added that it was vital to make good on the commitment.
"There is absolute conviction with my colleagues that, given the threat from Russia and the international security situation, there is no other alternative," the former Dutch prime minister said in The Hague.
The new spending target, to be achieved over the next 10 years, represents an increase of hundreds of billions of dollars a year from the current target of 2% of gross domestic product. Countries will spend 3.5% of GDP on core defense, such as troops and weapons, and 1.5% on broader measures, including cybersecurity, pipeline protection and road improvements to accommodate heavy military vehicles.
