US and Iran to resume negotiations next week - Focus on talks over Tehran's nuclear program
Israel and Iran appeared to respect a fragile ceasefire between them for a second day, and US President Donald Trump confirmed that American and Iranian officials will hold talks next week.
Trump, who helped negotiate the ceasefire that took effect on the 12th day of the war, told reporters at a NATO summit that he was not particularly interested in resuming negotiations with Iran, insisting that the US strikes had destroyed its nuclear program. Earlier in the day, an Iranian official questioned whether the United States could be trusted after its weekend attack.
"We might sign a deal, I don't know," Trump said. "The way I look at it, they fought, the fight is over."
Iran has not acknowledged that there will be talks next week, although the US envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has said there has been direct and indirect communication between the countries. A sixth round of US-Iran negotiations was scheduled for earlier this month in Oman but was cancelled after Israel attacked Tehran. President Donald Trump insisted that the US attacks on Iran dealt a devastating blow to the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme.
Earlier, Trump said the ceasefire was going "very well" and added that Iran "will not have a bomb and will not enrich uranium."
Tehran has insisted it will not give up its nuclear program. In a vote that underscores the difficult road ahead, parliament agreed to fast-track a proposal that would halt the country's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN watchdog that has monitored the program for years.
The agency's director general, Rafael Mariano Grossi, said he had written to Iran to discuss resuming inspections of its nuclear facilities. Among other things, Iran claims to have moved its highly enriched uranium before the US strikes, and Grossi stressed that his inspectors should reassess the country's stockpiles.
