"Hopeless" colossal tax debt: 57% of businesses are no more

While the year 2022 has found taxes with a colossal amount of uncollected liabilities in the amount of 1.1 billion euros, it must be underlined that a large part of it can’t be collected. This conclusion comes by considering the age of these obligations since a good part of the debtor companies no longer exist.

At the beginning of 2022, these obligations were in the value of 134.9 billion ALL, or over 1.1 billion euros, which belongs to 192,701 debtor entities, a number that has increased significantly during the past year. On the other hand, it is noticed that the vast majority of obligations are older than 5 years.

The High State Control published data for the tax debt, showing that the largest share of the stock according to age is occupied by obligations from 2–5 years with a weight of 39% and obligations over 5 years with a weight of 39%.

Expressed in debt value, it turns out that 52.3 billion in liabilities are older than 5 years, while another 52.3 billion are 2–5 years old. In total, 104 billion lek of liabilities, a little less than 1 billion euros, are older than 2 years.

What makes the collection of this debt even more hopeless is the fact that the vast majority of companies that have accumulated it no longer exist, or at least, are no longer active.
