The world's oldest person turns 116 - Ethel Caterham was born 5 years before the start of World War I
The world's oldest person has celebrated her 116th birthday in Surrey. Ethel Caterham became the world's oldest person in April, following the death of Brazilian nun Inah Canbarro Lucas, who was 116 years old.
She will celebrate her birthday at a nursing home in Lightwater and spend the day "at her own pace", surrounded by her family.
Mrs Caterham was born on 21 August 1909, in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, five years before the outbreak of World War I, the second youngest of eight siblings. This makes her the last person to have lived during the period when Edward VII was King of Great Britain.
According to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), she met her husband Norman, who was a major in the British Army, at a dinner party in 1931. They served in Hong Kong and Gibraltar and had two children. Her husband died in 1976, according to records.
A spokesperson for the nursing home said: "Ethel and her family are very grateful for all the messages and interest shown to her as she celebrates her 116th birthday this year."
Last year, Mrs Caterham was sent a card from the king to mark her 115th birthday.
The title of oldest person ever is held by French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived 122 years and 164 days, according to Guinness World Records.
