Almost 2 cars per family in Durrës, more than in Tirana/Korça and Gjirokastra with the lowest number of vehicles in relation to families
In the third quarter of 2024, the total number of cars registered in Albania reached 939,152, according to data reported by INSTAT. This number includes all counties of Albania, highlighting the unique features of each region regarding the number of vehicles used by households. This report shows the contrasts between urban and rural areas, as well as the tendency of the population to rely on private transport.
According to the analysis carried out by "Scan Intel", after crossing the data of INSTAT and CENS 2023, it turns out that the county of Durres has 127,173 registered cars, with an average of 1.85 cars per family, making this county one of the the most motorized in the country. Next, Shkodra region registers 66,982 cars, with an average of 1.38 cars per family.
Kukësi also presents a high level of cars per household, with an average of 1.37, which shows the importance of private vehicles in this county to meet daily needs. Meanwhile, although the capital, Tirana has the largest absolute number of vehicles with 327,606, but the average number of cars per family is 1.32.
Compared to Durrës, Shkodra and Kukës, Tirana has a lower number of vehicles per family and this can be explained by the fact that the need for personal vehicles is reduced due to the use of other alternatives for movement such as public transport, bicycles, scooter etc. Likewise, the high cost of living and urban development affect the decision of families to buy or not a vehicle.
In contrast, counties such as Korça and Gjirokastra average only 0.88 and 0.92 cars per household, respectively, indicating a more limited use of private vehicles. In these areas, the simpler infrastructure and the lower need for urban transport affect the reduction of motorization per household. Also, counties such as Berati, Dibra, Lezha and Fieri show a lower level of cars per family, with an average ratio ranging from 1.04 to 1.06, indicating that in these regions private vehicles are not as widespread as in other regions of the country.
