Albania produces more waste/ In 2024, each resident generated an average of 360

In 2024, Albania produced over 862 thousand tons of waste, marking an increase of 2.14%, compared to 2023. Each citizen generated an average of 360 kilograms of waste per year, or 9 kilograms more than two years ago.

The majority of waste, a full 89.5%, is household or similar, representing around 771 thousand tons in total. The structure of waste has not changed much over the years. Organic waste accounts for over half of the total, at 57.3%, while plastic and paper or cardboard each account for around 9-10%.

If we analyze the way waste is managed, the picture remains the same, with most ending up in landfills. A full 76.3% of waste in 2024 was landfilled, while only 18.8% was recycled. Only a small portion, 4.9%, was used for energy production. A positive development is the drastic reduction in illegal dumping outside landfills, which has fallen to just 0.02% of the total.

The data from the last three years clearly show the continuous increase in waste. In 2022, 820 thousand tons were managed, with 295 kilograms per inhabitant, in 2023 this figure increased to 844 thousand tons and 351 kilograms per inhabitant, while in 2024 it reached 862 thousand tons and 360 kilograms per inhabitant. For urban waste alone, the increase is even more noticeable, from 261 kilograms per inhabitant in 2022 to 322 kilograms in 2024.

These figures signal a significant challenge for the future. The figures show an increasing trend, while recycling and management capacities remain almost unchanged.
