How much does the Albanian underground export? About 1.37 billion euros, or 5.3% of the Gross Domestic Product
"Scan Intel" has analyzed the value of what the Albanian underground produces in a year, at least in exports. For this reason, exports of 14 items have been filtered, where minerals and metals mainly dominate. The latest public values in this regard refer to the year 2024 as complete. On the other hand, the total value that we will derive from this calculation constitutes more than a third of the market.
In total, the figures for 2024 speak of a full 133 billion lek of exports of these products, which translates to a full 1.37 billion euros. This figure is equivalent to almost 5.3% of our country's Gross Domestic Product in terms of estimates for 2024.
If we look in more detail at these 14 items according to their ranking and weight over the total, we notice that the first 5 represent more than 80% of the total. In first place, by a significant margin, are “mineral fuels”, i.e. hydrocarbons, with a full 45 billion lek, or 34% of the total. Then follows “Iron and steel” with about 29 billion lek, or about 22% of the total. They are followed by “Ores, slag and ash”, with 10.7%, “Aluminum and articles thereof” with 9.2%, “salts, sulfides, oxides, lime and cement” with 8.7%, and then the base metals, copper, lead, zinc, tin and nickel.
Compared to previous years, we see that in recent years a decline in exports in value has been recorded. The increase was significantly pronounced during 2022, mainly as a result of the increase in raw material prices in international markets. While in 2024 exports of these products, mainly underground ones, reached a value of 133 billion lek, in 2022 they were fixed at around 209 billion lek. But, on the other hand, the weak European currency has also played its role.
If we were to compare this with 2005, the last year with public data in this regard, we see that the difference is drastic. At that time, the value of underground product exports was set at just over 100 million euros.
