Fewer Albanians work for free for family businesses/Young people and women continue to remain more exposed
The percentage of people working unpaid in family businesses has decreased during 2025, indicating a slight improvement in the structure of the labor market in Albania. According to INSTAT data, 21.1% of employees were unpaid workers in family businesses, down from 24.2% a year earlier.
The decline is seen for both men and women, although women continue to be significantly more involved in this form of employment. In 2025, 29.3% of employed women worked unpaid in the family business, compared to 14.4% of men. This shows that the burden of family work continues to fall disproportionately on women.
Another interesting indicator is related to age. Young people aged 15–24 are the group most affected by unpaid work. In the 15–24 age group, 34.1% of employees were unpaid workers in 2025, although this figure is also lower than the 41.8% a year earlier. This suggests that many young people continue to help out in family businesses without regular payment, especially in rural areas and in agricultural activities.
Education appears to have a direct impact on this phenomenon. People with 8 or 9 years of education have the highest rate of unpaid work, at 34.5% in 2025. For those with secondary education, this percentage drops to 17%, while for those with higher education it is only 4.3%. These data show that the higher the level of education, the greater the opportunities for paid employment.
Although the overall trend is positive and participation in unpaid work is decreasing, figures show that this phenomenon still remains widespread in certain segments of the population. Women, young people and people with lower education continue to be the groups most exposed to working in family businesses without direct financial benefit, highlighting the need for policies that promote formal and paid employment.
