North Macedonia, in the Vertical Gas Corridor - Aiming for secure, diversified and competitive supply

North Macedonia is expected to join the Vertical Gas Corridor, one of the most important European initiatives for diversifying natural gas supplies and strengthening energy stability in Southeastern, Central and Eastern Europe.
The decision was confirmed at the meeting of gas transmission system operators, held in Athens, where NOMAGAS's membership in this regional cooperation framework was agreed. In addition to the countries already part of this initiative – Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary – North Macedonia and Serbia are also in the process of joining.
For the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Mineral Resources, this represents an important step in achieving the strategic objective of North Macedonia becoming an active part of the European energy network, with a secure, diversified and competitive supply of natural gas.
Membership in the Vertical Gas Corridor does not imply the construction of a single new pipeline, but rather integration into a coordinated European network of national pipelines, interconnectors and terminals, through which natural gas can be transported in several directions, from the south to the north of Europe.
This initiative is directly related to the capital infrastructure projects being implemented, the construction of the interconnector with Greece, which is expected to be operational in 2027, as well as the preparations for the interconnector with Serbia. With the implementation of these projects, North Macedonia will for the first time have the opportunity to secure access to more natural gas sources, including liquefied natural gas.
Formal membership in this initiative is expected to take place in September in Thessaloniki, when the declaration of accession within the framework of cooperation on the Vertical Gas Corridor will be officially signed.
