Oil price map, how does Albania rank? Global markets push prices up. Some

Oil prices in international markets continue to remain at high levels, reflecting tensions and uncertainties in the global energy market. According to the latest data from commodity markets, Brent crude oil was trading at around $89.3 per barrel, as of March 11, 2026.

The growth and fluctuations in international energy markets are also reflected in fuel prices in different countries of the world. According to data from the international platform "Global Petrol Prices", on March 9, 2026 the average price of oil in the world was about $ 1.33 per liter  (see here) . However, the differences between countries are very large and are mainly related to fiscal policies, taxes and subsidies that governments apply to fuels.

At around $2.39 per liter, Albania ranks among the countries with the highest oil prices in the world. According to data from "Global Petrol Prices", the country is positioned at the top of the global ranking, next to some of the developed European economies such as Sweden ($2,354 per liter), while resulting in higher prices than large European Union countries such as Italy ($2,273) and France ($2,267). Even higher prices are recorded only in some markets with very high fuel taxes or high import costs, such as Singapore ($2,446 per liter), Switzerland ($2,511) and Germany ($2,525).

In the Balkan region, prices are significantly lower compared to Albania. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, a liter of diesel costs about $1,516, in North Macedonia about $1,611, while in Montenegro about $1,742 per liter. In Serbia, the price of diesel reaches about $2,008 per liter.

At the other end of the scale are the major oil-producing countries, where fuel prices remain very low, often due to state subsidies. In Venezuela, a liter of diesel costs only about $0.004, in Iran about $0.006, and in Libya about $0.024 per liter.

In the world's major economies, prices are more moderate. In the United States, a liter of diesel costs about $1.284, while in Japan it is about $0.927 per liter.

At the top of the list of the world's highest prices are markets with high taxes and high import costs. In Hong Kong, a liter of diesel costs around $3,946, while in some European countries such as Denmark ($2,713) and Germany ($2,525) prices remain among the highest globally.

Faced with rising energy prices, several countries in the region have taken measures to mitigate the impact on consumers.

In Croatia, the government decided to cap fuel prices to protect citizens' living standards. According to the decision, the maximum price of Eurodiesel without additives will be around 1.55 euros per liter, while Eurosuper gasoline will not exceed 1.50 euros per liter.

Meanwhile, Slovenia decided to lower excise taxes on fuels to cushion the impact of rising global oil prices. From March 10 to March 23, 2026, the maximum price of gasoline has been set at 1,466 euros per liter, while diesel at 1,528 euros per liter, according to a statement from the Ministry of Environment and Energy.

The high price level in Albania is mainly related to the tax structure and market costs. Although countries purchase oil from the same international markets, the final price varies due to the fiscal policies applied by governments. In Albania, the price of fuel includes several taxes, such as excise duty, VAT, sales tax and carbon tax, which significantly increase the final price for consumers.
