Analysis/ Every 1 euro of tourism generates up to 2.8 euros in the economy - "Tourism beyond the beach", Why is every tourist worth more than he seems?

Tourism in Albania is no longer just a matter of packed beaches and full hotels during the summer season. A recent analysis published by ALTAX shows that the real impact of this sector goes far beyond the direct tourism industry, becoming one of the main pillars of the country's economy.
According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) report for 2025, the economic multiplier of tourism in Albania reaches 2.6–2.8 times. This means that every 1 euro spent by tourists generates an additional 1.6–1.8 euros in the economy. From about 5.5 billion euros in direct tourism spending during 2025, the total economic impact is estimated to reach 14.3–15.4 billion euros. In this way, tourism contributes about 26.4% to Gross Domestic Product, ranking as the sector with the greatest impact on the Albanian economy.
According to the analysis, the major impact of tourism is related to the indirect and induced effects it creates on the economy. Indirect effects, linked to the supply chain, generate around 4.6–5.4 billion euros. This means that tourism supports a wide range of economic activities, including farmers in Lushnja, Fier, Dibër; fishermen in Vlorë, Durrës and Lezha, as well as the construction and service sectors in Tirana and tourist areas.
Meanwhile, induced effects related to the spending of sector employees add another 4.0–4.9 billion euros to the economy. These expenditures translate into higher consumption in supermarkets, shops, bars, restaurants and other services across the country.
In terms of employment, tourism generates around 274–278 thousand direct jobs, while another 120 thousand to 207 thousand jobs are indirectly related to the sector in areas such as agriculture, trade, transport and energy.
According to ALTAX's analysis, the regional comparison shows that Albania ranks well, with 2.6-2.8x, close to Greece and Croatia (2.7-2.9x), but behind Montenegro (2.9-3.1x) and above Bulgaria (2.4-2.6x).
However, the analysis highlights that the potential for tourism remains even greater. Likewise, seasonality remains a challenge, as around 75–80% of tourism activity is concentrated in just 4–5 months of the year.
According to ALTAX, if these constraints are addressed through policies that promote domestic production and expand the tourist season, the economic multiplier could increase to 3.0–3.2 times. This would bring an additional 2–3 billion euros to the economy.
In this way, tourism is increasingly emerging as a force that connects different sectors of the economy and different regions of the country. According to the analysis, this makes tourism a key element in the country's economic transformation and one of the pillars of the new development model called "Albania 2.0".
