Berat leads in emigration, followed by Vlora and Lezha/ WB and INSTAT survey:

Emigration remains one of the most important phenomena that has shaped Albanian society over the past decades. The results of the 2024 Family Migration Survey, conducted by INSTAT in collaboration with the World Bank, provide for the first time a complete picture of the real prevalence of emigration by region, using advanced statistical weighting methods to ensure national representativeness.

According to the analysis, Berat emerges as the region with the highest percentage of families that have experienced emigration, with around 69% of families having at least one member living or having lived abroad. Following Berat are Vlora and Lezha, where emigration affects approximately one in two families. This high level is linked to historical and economic factors, including geographical proximity to traditional destinations such as Italy and Greece, as well as limited local employment opportunities.

In contrast, Tirana, despite having the largest absolute number of households due to its population, exhibits a lower prevalence of emigration. This is explained by the fact that the capital offers more employment opportunities and services, reducing the pressure for emigration compared to rural or coastal areas.

The survey data also shows that regions such as Shkodra, Fier and Elbasan have high levels of emigration, but not as extreme as Berat and Vlora. Meanwhile, northern areas such as Kukës and Dibra continue to show strong emigration trends, driven by a lack of economic opportunities and limited infrastructure.

The survey results confirm that emigration is not uniformly distributed. Regions with weaker economies and fewer employment opportunities have higher rates, while urban areas like Tirana have lower rates.

The Albania Migration Survey 2024 is a nationally representative survey consisting of 5,002 households surveyed, including 3,804 households with a migration history and 1,198 non-migratory households. In total, the survey includes 17,905 individuals, of whom 3,755 are migrants currently abroad and 2,236 are returnees.
