Albania is facing the visible effects of population aging, as a result of a period of rapid demographic transition. During the last decade, a significant increase in the number of elderly people has been observed, while the number of children has decreased due to the decline in fertility. In parallel, mass immigration has contributed to the reduction of the young age group.

This demographic transformation has influenced the reduction of the average size of families, which has gone from 3.9 members reported by Cens2011, to 3.2 members according to Cens 2023 data. These changes are also reflected in dependency ratios. In 2011, the youth dependency ratio was 30.4%, while in the current period it has dropped to 24%. Meanwhile, the elderly dependency ratio has seen a significant increase, rising from 16.7% in 2011 to 30.4% in 2023.

An interesting aspect of this analysis is the number of people over 100 years old living in Albania. According to the data analyzed by "Scan Intel" based on the figures of the 2023 Census, in our country there are 364 people who belong to this age group, of which 63 are men and 301 are women, a trend related to longer life expectancy. higher for women compared to men.

The Gerontology Association, created to identify the problems of the elderly, has discovered that about 60% of the elderly in Albania suffer from chronic diseases. Also, economic difficulties, financial insufficiency and living alone, which often leads to an isolated lifestyle, are the main problems faced by the elderly. Specifically, in Albania, more than 64 thousand elderly people live alone due to the emigration of their children or their abandonment.

According to the publication of an analysis on the mapping of social services, which belongs to the year 2023, it turns out that in Albania, 391 institutions offer social care services, or 16% more than in 2021. If we categorize them according to typology, it turns out that services for the elderly make up 13% of the total. However, this age group is the second category with the highest weight of those in need of this service.
