Poland takes the presidency of the EU - The agenda focuses on the defense and

Poland has officially assumed its presidency of the Council of the EU, with a focus on the defense and security of Europe. Among other things, the country's prime minister, Donald Tusk, emphasized that Poland is the most pro-European country on the continent.

Poland has held a festive ceremony in Warsaw to mark the start of its presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The country is tasked with leading the work of the Council and representing all member states in negotiations with other EU institutions. The position rotates among the EU's 27 member states every six months, with Hungary ending its term in December.

"If Europe is weak, it will not survive. We must do everything possible so that the EU and Poland do not pay the highest price for freedom, for strength, for sovereignty," emphasized Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Poland, once known as a problem in European Union politics, is now in the spotlight and one of the most important members. In his speech, Prime Minister Tusk emphasized the close connection between European and Polish values, calling Poland "the most pro-European nation on the continent."

Given the ongoing war in Ukraine and the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border, the next presidency will focus on European security and defence.

"Poland is taking the lead of the EU at the best possible moment," European Council President Antonio Costa said at the event. "The vitality of Polish democracy and the sense of national identity of its citizens strengthens the entire European Union," he said, also stressing the importance of continued support for Ukraine.
