Greenland seeks independence - Prime Minister plans to secede from Denmark

Greenland's prime minister has called for the country's independence from Denmark, following US President Donald Trump's comments on the island's purchase. He added that the island is not for sale and proposed a referendum on independence in 2025.

Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede has called for the North Atlantic island to seek independence from former colonial ruler Denmark during a New Year's address. The world's largest island, which is home to about 57,000 inhabitants, was a Danish colony until it became a self-governing territory of Denmark in 1979. Since 2009, Greenland has had the right to declare independence through a referendum.

"History and current conditions have shown that our cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark has failed to create full equality. Like other countries in the world, we must work to remove the 'shackles of colonialism' and move forward," said Egede.

His speech comes after US President-elect Donald Trump last month reiterated his desire to buy Greenland from Denmark. Responding to Trump's recent comments, Egede said last week that Greenland "is not for sale and will never be for sale."

An independence movement is gaining momentum in part because of revelations about abuses by Danish authorities over the past century, including a forced contraception campaign in the 1960s and 1970s. The prime minister has suggested an independence referendum could coincide with parliamentary elections. in April.

Greenland is a country rich in mineral resources, oil and natural gas, but it is supported by Danish subsidies worth about 500 million euros a year. A large US Air Force base is located on the island, making it a strategically vital location for the US military. Following Trump's comments last month, Denmark announced it would increase defense spending on the island by at least 1.3 billion euros.
