Officially, the US will sanction the Serbian oil company Serbian President

The Serbian President, Aleksandar Vučić, has confirmed that the US Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment, Jose Fernandez, has informed him that the US will impose sanctions against the Serbian Oil Industry (NIS).

"They will impose sanctions, not only financial, but full sanctions against the NIS company. These will not be sanctions against companies that are owned by Russia, or that are financed by Russian banks, but will be direct sanctions against our company NIS", said Vučić at the meeting of the Government of Serbia.

During the day, the Serbian president also met with the American ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, and among other things, he said that he also discussed this topic. According to Vučić, Washington will give Serbia 30 days to "review the situation and take action, and within 60 days to finish everything".

Vucic said on December 13 that the US would impose sanctions on NIS within days, because this company, which was once state-owned, is now in Russian hands.

Since 2008, NIS has been owned by the Russian state-owned company Gazprom Neft and its parent company, Gazprom. The European Union and the United States blacklisted Gazprom Neft in 2014 after Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula.

Gazprom, meanwhile, is not on the West's sanctions list. Despite efforts to diversify energy sources, after the start of the war in Ukraine, Serbia continues to be significantly dependent on Russian energy sources.
