Traffic difficulties due to rainfall - ARRSH: Contractors are on the ground

The Albanian Road Authority has announced that during the night hours, rainfall continued throughout the country, causing problems on several road axes. The intensity of rainfall has increased significantly in the southeast of the country, while in the early hours of the morning, rainfall has ceased in the northern areas.

In addition to the rain, snowfall was also recorded in some mountainous segments. Specifically, there was snow on the Bogë–Theth and Qafë Mali–Fierzë axes, which made vehicle movement difficult, especially during the early morning hours.

As a result of the unstable weather, problems have arisen on some road axes with falling stones and inert materials on the road surface.

In the Northern Region, the problematic situation has been identified on the axes Bajram Curri–Valbonë, Dushaj–Lekbibaj, Sopot–Kam, Qafë Mali–Fierzë, Ura e Fanit, Rrëshen–Shpal, Shpal–Fushë Arrëz, Hani i Hotit–Dogana Vermosh, Kukës–Shishtavec, Shpal–Kthesa e Hadrojit, Kukës–Krumë, Skuraj–Burrel as well as Peshkopi–Vasije.

Meanwhile, in the Southern Region, traffic difficulties have been observed on the Lazarat, Kardhiq–Delvinë, Lekël–Këlcyrë and Sevaster–Kalivac axes, mainly due to the fall of inert materials and high humidity on the road.

The Albanian Road Authority emphasizes that contractors with vehicles and workers are on the ground 24/7 to clean road axes and guarantee normal vehicle circulation.

In this situation, drivers are advised to exercise increased caution while driving, reduce speed due to the moisture on the road, respect road signs, and equip themselves with winter tires and chains, especially when traveling to mountainous areas with the presence of snow.

Meanwhile, the Institute of Geosciences has predicted that on Wednesday, intense rainfall is expected mainly in the north and south of the country. In the regions of Shkodër, Kukës, Dibër, Lezhë, Durrës, Elbasan, Vlorë and Gjirokastër, there may be flash floods of small mountain rivers and landslides. In urban areas, localized flooding problems may occur in these regions, depending on the state of the sewerage.

According to IGJEO's hydrological calculations, as a result of the high-intensity rainfall over the past few days, which will continue until Thursday, January 8, there will be a dangerous increase in flows and levels in the Drin-Buna rivers, Lake Skadar, the Mat, Shkumbin and Vjosa rivers.

The Drin-Buna River and Lake Skadar will have an increased risk of flooding.
