More travel chaos as cold waves bring more snow to Europe

More flights will be cancelled, trains delayed and roads blocked by snow across Europe in the coming days, as a cold snap is forecast to worsen, bringing even more heavy snowfall after days of travel disruption.

Authorities in the Netherlands told people to stay home on Wednesday if possible as a new snowstorm is expected. The French transport minister said airlines had been ordered to cancel at least 40% of flights at Paris' main airport, Charles de Gaulle, and a quarter of flights at the smaller Orly airport. Public transport in the Paris region would also likely be disrupted by the snow, he added.

As snowfall is expected again, Dutch airline KLM said it had pre-emptively canceled 600 flights on Wednesday to avoid last-minute cancellations that could leave travelers stranded at Schiphol airport, one of Europe's major hubs.

KLM had canceled 400 flights at Schiphol on Tuesday and told passengers to stay away from the airport to prevent overcrowding.

In Germany, temperatures dropped well below minus 10 degrees Celsius in the south and east of the country and much of the country was covered in snow.

In Britain, the Met Office said the risk of wintry weather could continue throughout the week for much of the country. Overnight temperatures on Tuesday had dropped to -12.5 degrees Celsius in Marham, Norfolk, in eastern England, marking the coldest night of the winter so far.

Snow and torrential rain have also caused chaos across the Western Balkans, closing roads, cutting off electricity and causing river flooding.
