"Albania's journey is unique" - Rama: The EU has surprised us

At the inaugural meeting of the Joint Consultative Committee with the EU Economic and Social Committee, Prime Minister Edi Rama expressed his gratitude for the opportunity that the European Union has given Albania to become part of the European "castle".

"We appreciate this especially thanks to the open manner and willingness of the president and his team. We have been welcomed inside the Brussels castle as equals and have been given the opportunity to feel ourselves as such. On the other hand, I am enthusiastic that the Committee will help encourage our actors to grow and become an important part of Albania's membership and its role in the European family. It has been a long road, with numerous challenges, but I must say that we are now living a historic moment, where Brussels and the EU have surprised us with their strong and clear will to accept us."

On the other hand, the EU Ambassador in Tirana, Silvio Gonzato, stressed the importance of involving civil society in the integration process.

"The integration process involves the whole of society. It cannot be the sole responsibility of the government and the Parliament; civil society organizations must play a key role. Countries aspiring to join the EU must engage civil society in all the necessary work before they become part of our family. Moving forward in the EU requires political commitment, citizen participation and an active civil society. The government can benefit from their expertise and knowledge, by making them part of the decision-making process."

Prime Minister Rama described Albania's journey towards the EU as unique and emphasized the need to utilize the EU's knowledge and instruments for a deep and sustainable transformation.
