Counterfeiting of currencies, criminal proceedings increase by 48% - Tirana, Shkodra and Vlora lead. Profile of the defendants
Counterfeiting coins and securities seems to have been a favorite "sport" in Albania, despite the legal consequences.
Throughout 2024, there was a significant increase in the number of proceedings registered for the criminal offense of "Counterfeiting of currencies and securities" compared to 2023 from 25 to 37 or about 48% and an increase from 9 to 10 in the number of proceedings sent to court.
Referring to the annual report of the Prosecutor General, regarding defendants, for these groups of criminal offenses, an increase in the number of defendants registered against this total in 2023 from 9 to 15 is noted, and an increase in the number of defendants who have been sent to court from 10 to 11.
However, in addition to the increase in proceedings, a decrease in the number of defendants convicted by the court from 9 to 7 compared to 2023 is noted.
Regarding the characteristics of the defendants, it turns out that 92.86% are adult males; 71.43% have secondary education; 80% of the defendants are employed in the private sector and 92.86% of the defendants live in the city. While 85.71% of the defendants have no previous convictions.
Regarding geography, it results that the highest number of proceedings registered for counterfeiting of coins and securities is in the prosecutor's offices at the courts of first instance: Tirana 38% of the total number of proceedings, Shkodër 19% of the total number of proceedings registered, Vlora 13% of the total number of proceedings registered, etc.
The data show that the lowest number of proceedings registered for these groups of criminal offenses is in the prosecutor's offices at the first instance courts: Dibër, Lezhë, Fier, Kukës, Berat where no proceedings for counterfeiting of coins and securities have been registered.
