New power plants, 537 MW added to domestic production - ERE: Impact from the growth of solar plants. Private sector owns 51.4% of the total
537 MW were added to the domestic electricity generation capacity during 2024, reaching a total of 3213 MW. According to the Energy Regulatory Authority, the increase in installed capacity during the year was mainly a result of the increase in renewable sources of photovoltaic electricity. “Electricity generation plants are connected to both the electricity transmission network and the distribution network,” ERE reports.
With the addition of new power plants, private producers account for about 51.4% of this capacity, while the electricity production capacity of the public company KESH is 1563 MW and accounts for about 48.6% of the total.
Meanwhile, the total net domestic electricity production realized for the year 2024 is 7836 GWh, 55.7% of which was produced by KESH and 44.3% by other producers. From the analysis of the history of electricity production recorded in the country, the year 2024 results above the average of the period 2009–2024, by about 1066 GWh.
However, compared to 2023, production decreased by 959 GWh. "This is due to the fact that, from a hydrological point of view, 2024 was below the multi-year average. 2024 was a relatively dry year, with flows below the 30-year average (1994–2024)", explains the Regulatory Entity, which highlights the dependence of electricity production in our country on weather conditions.
Total electricity consumption in 2024 reached 8170 GWh, an increase of 294 GWh compared to the previous year. Electricity consumption is realized by consumers supplied in the regulated market and consumers supplied in the liberalized market. Currently, the largest part of consumption is in the regulated market supplied by the Universal Service Provider, part of OSHEE Group.
