G7 leaders meet in Canada - Focus on Israel-Iran conflict and Trump tariffs
Leaders of the Group of Seven major economies gathered in the Canadian Rockies, with the Israel-Iran conflict expected to top the agenda.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his priorities are strengthening peace and security, building critical mineral supply chains and creating jobs. But U.S. tariffs, as well as conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, are expected to be high on the agenda at the summit.
Israel and Iran launched fresh attacks on each other overnight, killing dozens of people just hours before the leaders of the world's industrialized democracies were due to meet.
A G7 official said the leaders plan to issue a joint statement on Iran calling for a de-escalation of tensions.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters that his goals for the summit include ensuring that Iran does not develop or possess nuclear weapons, ensuring Israel's right to defend itself and avoiding an escalation of the conflict.
The last time Canada hosted the meeting, in 2018, Trump left the summit before calling then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" and instructing the US delegation to withdraw approval for the final communique.
"This will be a successful meeting if Donald Trump doesn't have an outburst that risks disrupting the entire summit," said a professor of international affairs at the University of Ottawa.
Diplomats said Canada has abandoned the idea of a traditional comprehensive joint communique and will instead issue a summary of the leaders' statements, in the hope of containing a diplomatic disaster and preserving engagement with the United States.
