Digital transformation is critical for Germany - The country is "embracing" artificial intelligence at full speed

Digital change is "critical" and artificial intelligence (AI) will be key to Germany's future, said Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernization, Karsten Wildberger.
Germany is moving forward with efforts to modernize government services while expanding the use of artificial intelligence, he said. Despite this progress, the ministry added that more work is needed to make rules and laws more “innovation-friendly.”
His comments come as Germany this week opened an underground artificial intelligence factory in Munich, which aims to equip the country with its own sovereign artificial intelligence industry. He stressed that Germany has strong advantages, including research, industry expertise and access to data, which are the backbone of artificial intelligence.
"Firstly, we have fantastic research, also in artificial intelligence, and research institutes in Germany as well, and that is something we are exploiting. Secondly, we have fantastic industry with a lot of expertise in the fields and a lot of data," Wildberger said.
Germany set a new record in 2025 with 3,568 newly founded startups, a 29 percent increase from 2024, with more than a quarter of all new startups using artificial intelligence as a core part of their business model.
