Tirana-Rinas, by train in 20 minutes - Details of the three railway lines that will start operating in 2026
As the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy aims to concession the operation of passenger trains on the national railway network, details have been announced regarding the Tirana - Durrës - Rinas railway project in terms of the length and time needed to describe its three lines.
Thus, the Tirana - Durrës railway has a length of 37.9 km, while the travel time will be about 36 minutes. The railway from Tirana to Rinas airport will have a length of 15.4 km, which will be described in about 20 minutes, while Durrës - Rinas has a length of 32.6 km and the travel time is estimated at 28 minutes.
The rehabilitation of the existing Tirana - Durrës line and the construction of a new railway branch towards Rinas airport is one of the most advanced projects aimed at reviving train transport in Albania.
In this context, proposals are also being developed to award a public service contract, which will provide for the operation of passenger trains. The selected operator will also supply and possibly maintain new, second-hand or leased trains, and may also be required to collect fares.
The tender is expected to begin in the third quarter of 2025 for operations that will begin in the third quarter of 2026, precisely with the aforementioned project, while the aim is then to expand services on the Vorë - Hani i Hotit and Durrës - Pogradec lines.
Passenger operations are estimated at 1.1 million train-km in 2026, increasing with future expansions to around 4 million train-km in 2036.
