Albania relaunches Aviation School - Only 10 cadets will undergo an 18-month

The procedures for recruiting students for the Vlora Aviation School have begun. The school will be re-opened after 19 years thanks to the collaboration between the Albanian state-owned arms manufacturing company, KAYO, and the Israeli defense technology company Elbit Systems Ltd.

This school will produce military and civilian pilots, military and civilian air traffic controllers. By 2030, it is intended to train 30 pilots and 50 military air traffic controllers.

Elbit Systems Ltd will bring advanced technology, such as flight simulators in difficult conditions and modern training equipment. According to the Ministry of Defense, the establishment of the Aviation Academy will bring cost reductions, sustainable and independent certification, as well as increased national capacities in defense and civil aviation.

But how will the selection of students be done?

Applications are open to both active duty and civilian youth who meet the criteria. In the first phase, 40 people will be selected, who will undergo rigorous testing. After the testing, only 10 cadets will be selected from this group of 40 people, who will undergo an 18-month curriculum to be certified as pilots. Currently, training helicopters have been ordered, which are expected to arrive in Albania during May.

In 1962, the then Minister of Defense, Beqir Balluku, ordered the establishment of the Aviation School in the city of Vlora. Only a year later, in 1963, fighter-bomber pilots, students who had dropped out of school in the former Soviet Union, would graduate. This school would close in 2007.

As a result of the changing geopolitical context and increasing security challenges, many countries are increasing investments in defense and modernization of military capacities. Albania is also following the same direction, aiming to strengthen its capabilities in the field of aviation and increase national capacities for training and air operations.

The re-establishment of the Aviation Academy in Vlora is seen as an important step in this direction, as it is expected to restore the tradition of training pilots and aviation specialists to the country.
