Is Generation Z writing the rules of work? - Hasalla: Younger generations are

Gen Z and millennials are increasingly placing more importance on the purpose and meaning their work gives them. For many, a job is not just about the paycheck, but also about the impact it can have on society. But are young people's expectations of employers changing compared to previous generations?

Gertjana Hasalla Employment Expert:  “We really see a huge change in the way young people think and view work. And when we say young people, we always talk about this generation Z, because it is an important generation, it is the future of employment. They are not willing to accept long hours at work, they are not willing to accept exploitation. They want a salary that is satisfactory to cover the cost of living and they want to spend more time in a democratic work environment than in an authoritarian work environment. This is, I believe, an extraordinary change between generations, because the previous generations of our parents or grandparents have always been willing to accept even more difficult conditions simply to make a living. Meanwhile, we see that young people today, and these are statistics given for Albania, but also for the entire region, choose to change jobs if they do not feel good in the job they are in. And they do this frequently. We often say and think that you should stay at least a year in a workplace where you really understand how it works and feel whether you can stay in it for a long time or not. But we see that young people of generation Z choose to stay in one job for a few months and then go to another job because they cannot find good working conditions, they cannot find bosses or let's say people who are democratic in the choices they make within the workplace and the salary is not always satisfactory. And we must always keep in mind that especially young people, the fact that they are leaving so much means that work, which is the number one factor, is not helping them stay in Albania. And if work does not help them, then nothing else can do it for them.”

According to Deloitte's report on Generation Z and Millennials 2025, about 89% of Gen Z and 92% of millennials say that having a purpose at work is important to their motivation, engagement, and well-being.

This shows that younger generations are increasingly seeking roles that give them the opportunity to contribute beyond their daily tasks. But how prepared are Albanian companies for this generation?

"I often hear from employers who have complaints about Generation Z, about the way they behave in the workplace, about work ethics, about communication and everything else. We can't say that they are prepared. Especially institutions that are a little bit more rigid, have rules to follow, have a little bit of difficulty working with this new generation that demands more freedom, demands a more democratic environment. Companies that are foreign and usually those that are run by foreigners are always more open to welcoming this change that young people bring, to welcoming young people who have different opinions and who want to contribute more. But they are not 100% prepared, this is a little bit certain, but it is good that they start thinking about this, because the future of work is young people."

This trend is gradually changing expectations towards employers, pushing companies to focus more on work culture, the organization's mission, and the impact they create in the community.
