Albanian citizens who use a vehicle have paid a total of approximately 213 million euros in road tax.

Official data from the Ministry of Finance shows that revenues from the circulation tax, which is collected on each liter of diesel and gasoline, have increased significantly by 9% compared to the previous year.

In other words, approximately 18 million euros more were paid than in 2023.

The increase in income is dictated by the increase in fuel consumption. Official data from the Ministry of Finance show that over the past 12 months, Albanian citizens and tourists have consumed about 657.5 thousand tons of fuel. Compared to a year ago, the import of this product has increased by about 43 thousand tons and is at the historical level of the last 5 years.

This performance comes as a result of the increase in the flow of tourists to our country, a figure which is recorded at 11.7 million in 2024, where a good part of them come in personal vehicles and some rent vehicles to visit as many places as possible.

The circulation tax on diesel and gasoline is levied at the rate of 27 lek per liter.

In 2024, the Ministry of Finance had planned to collect 233 million euros from turnover tax, but 213 million were collected, with a shortfall of 20 million euros.

The circulation tax collects revenue from transport users and is collected during the purchase of fuel, for each liter consumed, and is then distributed for the construction and maintenance of roads.

The turnover tax is only 1 of 7 taxes levied on the consumption of fuels and which goes to the state coffers along with VAT, excise duty, carbon tax, etc.
