Oil prices are challenged, customs-cleared quantity increases - In March 2026,

Albanian citizens are challenging the drastic increase in the price of oil and gasoline due to the conflict in the Middle East by consuming more, as fuel imports have increased significantly during March 2026.

Referring to preliminary official data from the General Directorate of Customs, followed by TV SCAN, the amount of fuel imported and cleared through customs in March is higher compared to previous months of this year.

The increase is noticeable not only in relation to February, but also to January 2026, signaling an expansion of supply in the market despite external pressures.

Specifically, the data show that in March 2026, a month that brought a significant increase in the price of oil on the market, which reached approximately 224 lek/liter, 56,903 tons of fuel were cleared, with an increase of 5013 tons, while compared to January 2026, the increase is 3491 tons.

What is noticeable from the figures is that even in comparison to March of the last 8 years, starting from 2019, it turns out that in March 2026 more goods were cleared in customs.

The increase in imports may be related to several main factors. The first reason may be an increase in supply from importing companies to anticipate instability in international markets, influenced by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Second, the increase in demand in the domestic market is also related to the seasonal increase in economic activity, which may have prompted operators to increase the volume of supply. And the third is that despite the price, citizens have not reduced their movements.

Fuel prices in Albania have increased significantly in recent weeks, driven by fluctuations in international oil markets and transportation costs. This has put additional pressure on consumers and businesses, especially in sectors that depend on transportation and logistics.

For this reason, the government has taken measures by establishing the Transparency Board to control price abuses, by setting ceiling prices for wholesale and retail sales of oil and gasoline, and has decided to reduce excise duty by 20% when the price exceeds 220 lek per liter. On the other hand, a Task Force has also been established that checks retail fuel points on a daily basis in the field, with the aim of preventing abuses and protecting consumers.
