How much tax do businesses pay in 4 months? - This year, freelancers with less than 3 clients are also included in the scheme
The tax paid by enterprises in the country on accumulated profit was recorded at approximately 24.5 billion lek or 245 million euros in the first four months of the year alone.
Official data from the Ministry of Finance show an insignificant decrease compared to the same period a year ago, but compared to the planning made, they result in about 20 million euros less.
However, it appears that in April alone, the state budget collected 70 million euros from this item, an increase of 13 million euros compared to April 2024 and exceeding the plan by 26.5%.
If we analyze the quarterly income for the last decade, the tax paid on business profits has had a progressive increase from year to year.
Thus, from 10.2 billion lek in 2015 to 24.5 billion lek in 2025, the growth is recorded at 58.2%, which is an indicator of the increase in turnover and profits of large enterprises in the country.
According to tax administration data, there are currently approximately 16,000 enterprises across the country that pay profit tax, as small businesses with a turnover of 0-14 million lek are exempt. The profit tax rate for taxpayers with annual income over 14 million lek is applied at 15% of taxable profit.
While legal entities that carry out activities for the production/development of software, legal entities that carry out economic activities in the automotive industry and entities that develop hospitality activities certified as "agrotourism", pay 5% profit tax.
On the other hand, this year a progressive profit tax rate of 15-23% will be applied to the self-employed category, if they have fewer than three clients.
Referring to the Ministry of Finance's guidance which includes declarations from January 1, 2025, "if a self-employed person, 80% of the income earned is provided by 1 single client, or 90% of the income earned by less than 3 clients, for the purposes of calculating the tax liability on his annual net income (billed income minus deductible business expenses), the employment income tax rates will be applied which are 13-23% (after tax deductions)
Currently, the Profit Tax accounts for about 24% of annual tax revenues, ranking third in terms of its weight in the budget, after VAT and Personal Income Tax.
