How much weight do banks have in the economy? - BoA: Assets equal to 90.44% of Gross Domestic Product
Banks continue to play a significant role in the country's economy. However, last year saw a decline in assets relative to Gross Domestic Product.
According to data from the Bank of Albania's Financial Supervision Report, the banking system's assets are equal to 90.44% of the economy, which means that the banking system is almost as large as the entire economy.
The weight of the banking system in the economy, expressed through the ratio of total assets to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), continues to remain at high levels, but the indicator has decreased by 1.56 percentage points.
This indicates a decrease in the size of the banking system compared to the entire economy, that is, the banking system's assets, loans, deposits, government securities, and others, valued at all goods produced or services provided in the country.
Regarding the loan-to-GDP ratio, it has increased by 1.42 percentage points as a result of the greater growth of the loan portfolio compared to GDP growth.
Meanwhile, the loan/deposit ratio is at 49.55% from 46.07% in 2023, which means that for every 100 lek of deposits, 49.55 lek of loans were provided. During 2024, the indicator expanded, due to the different paces of the loan portfolio and total deposits (where the loan portfolio has experienced higher growth, compared to the growth of deposits).
Customer deposits remain the main source of funding for the Albanian banking system, accounting for 80.5% of total liabilities. The structure throughout 2024 reflects a higher growth in time deposits, followed by current accounts, while demand deposits have seen a slight increase.
