How much do Albanians pay for insurance? - AFSA: Per capita premium in 2025, about 12% higher. The market has a small share in the economy

Year after year, Albanians are spending more on insurance. The latest data from the Financial Supervisory Authority (AMF) shows that gross written premiums per capita in 2025 increased by approximately 12%. Last year, a citizen paid an average of 11,465 lek for life or non-life insurance, up from 10,251 lek in 2024.
Despite the fact that the per capita premium increased by 19% for life insurance and only 11% for non-life, the latter appears to have had a greater impact on the overall increase in the average per capita premium, because car insurance occupies the vast majority of the total market.
The reasons behind this increase may be different, ranging from the increase in prices of insurance products to the increase in the number of citizens paying for insurance.
The per capita premium in Albania is much lower than in other countries in the region, which means that the insurance culture continues to remain at very low levels.
According to official statistics, gross written premiums have reached approximately 1% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the first time. Despite this, the insurance market continues to occupy a very small share of the economy.
Non-life insurance includes accident and sickness insurance, motor, marine, aviation and transport insurance, fire and other property damage insurance, civil liability and credit and suretyship insurance. Meanwhile, life insurance provides coverage with a monetary amount (sum insured) to a specified beneficiary in the event of death, survival or disability (permanent or temporary) of the insured. Some of the life insurance products are loan life insurance (Debtor), student life, travel life and health or group life.
