Greece, 4 measures to curb fuel prices - Mitsotakis: They will cost 300 million euros for the April-May period

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced measures to support families and businesses affected by the war in the Middle East. As he stated, "we are prioritizing the formation of a unified European response and until then we are acting unilaterally also at the national level."
Mitsotakis announced a package of 4 targeted measures for the April-May period, worth 300 million euros.
First, to limit the negative impact of the global increase in oil prices on the supply chain, on the movement of goods and on agricultural production, the cost of oil will be intervened in by subsidizing it in the distribution network by 16 cents per liter. According to Mitsotakis, this measure means that the benefit for the consumer and the professional in the final price with VAT will reach 20 cents per liter. “Our goal here is that the increase in production costs is not transferred to the prices of products,” he added.
Secondly, in order to strengthen families against price increases, special support will be provided in the form of a Digital Fuel Card. This can be used at gas stations, on public transport and in taxis and is calculated on average at 36 cents per liter. Thus, with an average monthly consumption of 70 liters, the measure translates into savings of 50 euros in two months for the mainland and 60 euros for the islands.
Third, to relieve farmers from significant increases in chemical fertilizer prices, the state will subsidize 15% of the amount of their purchase invoices.
Fourth, as a hedge against the effects of high fuel prices for ships, a special compensation is being introduced for passenger shipping companies. The compensation will be linked to the mandatory discounts that must follow on tickets. “Our goal is to keep shipping ticket prices close to last year’s levels,” Mitsotakis stressed.
The cost of the initiative will be covered by public funds and by taxing the winnings of players of "casino-type" online gambling games, with the aim of securing 100 million euros.
