We often talk about record numbers of tourists, but how much does this success translate into the coffers of businesses that offer accommodation and food? "Scan Intel" has analyzed the latest data from the Structural Enterprise Survey, breaking down the annual turnover of the accommodation and food service sector into smaller time units.

According to the figures, around 17,742 businesses operating in this sector declared around 138.2 billion lek in net sales (approximately 1.44 billion euros). Although this sector represents around 15% of the total number of enterprises in the country, it generates around 3.9% of the total turnover of the economy.

If we translate this sales volume into the rhythm of a day, hour or minute, the figures take on another, more tangible dimension. We emphasize that this is an annual average calculated by dividing total sales by 365 days and includes every day of the year, but does not mean that every day has the same level of activity.

The accommodation and food sector has an average daily turnover of 378.7 million lekë (about 3.94 million euros). Every 60 minutes, around 15.7 million lekë (about 164 thousand euros) is collected. Per minute, this rate is around 263 thousand lekë (about 2,700 euros), while per second, around 4,380 lekë are "sold" in this sector.

In relation to the number of enterprises, an average business in the sector declares about 21,349 lekë in net sales per day, or about 7.8 million lekë per year. This figure includes both large hotel structures and small food service units.

The data suggest that the sector remains highly fragmented: it has a significant share in the number of enterprises and employment, but a significantly lower share in the total net sales of the economy. However, full conclusions on the level of formalization cannot be drawn from these data alone, as the result is also affected by the size of businesses, market structure and seasonality.

We must consider that this rate only reflects the direct turnover of hotels and restaurants, while the real tourism bill is much higher, as its chain feeds dozens of other industries, from transportation and agencies to local producers and retail sales.
