How many treasury bills did Albanians buy in 2024? - AFSA: Investment value,

In 2024, treasury bills and bonds were bought and sold in much higher amounts than in 2023. Despite the decrease in the number of transactions, their volume increased. This shows that last year, the value of investments multiplied, while even fewer citizens withdrew from the investment before the end of the term.

According to data from the Financial Supervisory Authority, about 50% of the transactions carried out in 2024 were direct purchases for the first time of government securities through auctions organized by the Bank of Albania, i.e. in the primary market, while only 37.6% of the transactions were returns of the initial amount of money invested and their interests, as a result of maturity, i.e. the end of the term.

Excluding interest, 40 billion lek of investments in treasury bills and bonds of individuals and other clients matured during 2024.

In the secondary market for government securities, which refers to the sale of securities between banks, funds and other individual investors, after they were initially purchased by the Bank of Albania and before the end of their term, 64% were bonds and about 36% treasury bills.

In terms of the number of transactions, almost 82% of all secondary market transactions in over-the-counter government securities are in treasury bills. About 97% of the transactions are carried out by individual investors.

Last year, 10 billion lek worth of government securities were purchased by banks and investment funds, which were then sold to individual investors, i.e. citizens or businesses. The volume of transactions of this type increased by 5.2 billion lek or 111.65% compared to 2023.

Fewer citizens have exited investments in 2024. Official statistics show that the sale of government securities by individual investors before maturity and subsequent purchase by banks or investment funds has decreased by 554 million lek or 17.50%.

Bonds are long-term debt instruments ranging from 2 to 20 years, while treasury bills are short-term instruments with maturities of 3, 6, and 12 months.

To invest in treasury bills and bonds, citizens can participate directly in the Bank of Albania's auctions or invest indirectly through investment funds, pension funds and other institutions authorized to invest in these instruments.
