Increasing the safety of 431 dams - WB: 1.6 million USD for feasibility study, approval at the end of May
The World Bank is expected to invest in dam safety in Albania, as it announced that at the end of May it expects to approve a fund of 1.6 million USD, which will be used to draft preliminary feasibility studies for 431 existing dams.
According to previously published documents, the overall goal is to identify and address the risks posed by the current dam infrastructure, with a focus on increasing the water storage capacity of reservoirs to adapt to climate change. This is because improving irrigation systems can contribute more to efficient and sustainable water management, at a time when water resources are threatened by climate change.
Specifically, the project aims to prepare the ground for increasing the safety and carrying capacity of dams for the irrigation of 180,000 ha of agricultural land, mainly located in the western coastal part of Albania from Shkodra to Vlora, which would enable 200,000 farms to increase yields and incomes.
Subsequently, the rehabilitation and modernization of dams, as well as improving their safety, will include hydrological assessment, structural strengthening and improvement of water storage in reservoirs, sediment management, modernization of control and monitoring, and other measures that would improve the safety and operation of dams.
According to the World Bank, increasing dam safety would provide socio-economic and environmental benefits in Albania, while the project implementer is the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
