Cyprus to supply Europe with gas - Cypriot President: Project will start

Part of the approximately 566 billion cubic meters of natural gas discovered in Cypriot waters could be shipped to European markets starting in 2027, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said.

According to him, the first quantity that can be exported will come from the Cronos field, which is operated by a consortium between the Italian company Eni and the French company TotalEnergies. The Cypriot president said that the final decision on the continuation of the project is expected to be taken next year, while the gas from Cronos could be sent to the processing plant in the Egyptian port of Damietta to be liquefied and shipped to Europe in 2027.

"Cyprus is part of the solutions for energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is essential to harmonize our interests with those of powerful states and act as an alternative energy corridor for Europe," he said.

The Ministry of Energy announced that natural gas from the Cronos field could reach the market faster due to existing infrastructure connecting it to the Egyptian Zor deposit, about 80 kilometers away. Official sources added that the target for the end of 2027 is “optimistic but achievable.”

Also, plans to export gas from another Cypriot field, Aphrodite, include the installation of a floating processing plant on the reservoir. There, the hydrocarbons will be converted into “dry gas”, which will be sent directly to customers in Egypt. The processed gas will then be transported to a plant near Port Said in Egypt and, depending on the agreement between Cyprus and the field operator, will be used for domestic Egyptian consumption or liquefied for export to Europe.
