PS rejects SPAK's request for Balluk's immunity - Manja: He no longer

The Socialist Party has rejected SPAK's request to lift the immunity of MP Belinda Balluku, preventing the change in her security measures. The Socialists' decision was presented at the meeting of the Parliamentary Group, where the Chairman of the Laws Committee, Ulsi Manja, presented the report of the Socialist members of the Mandates Council.

After analyzing SPAK's request, Manja emphasized that the request to change the security measure does not stand, as Balluku no longer exercises any public function.

"There is no new charge added, it remains the same. The claim for the aggravation of the security measure does not stand. Today as we speak, there is no charge of obstruction of justice. Second, whether in relation to the case, there is no direct or indirect evidence where MP Belinda Balluku has used her influence to destroy evidence. All documentation has been seized today at the Ministry of Interior and other institutions and is at the disposal of the prosecution, as well as a series of other evidence. So the risk of destroying evidence was not proven with real facts, but are considerations that are fundamentally based on the function that Belinda Balluku held. If there had been destruction of evidence, there would also have been another offense of obstruction of justice.

As for the risk of escape, it must be real. Balluku was aware of the investigation, she has traveled abroad several times and returned to Albania in respect of the security measure, the function she exercised and justice.

"We conclude that there is no room for granting authorization to replace the personal security measure, that of banning leaving the country, with the most severe measure, that of imprisonment or house arrest," said Manja.

In his speech, Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized that in six years at the helm of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, Balluku has worked to advance the government's ambitions in improving the sector, while she is also one of the most voted MPs.

"Today I want to tell Albanians that the epochal change that continues and will continue in the infrastructure and energy sector was not brought about by time, nor by money. It was brought about by no one and nothing other than their vote for this party, for the government of this party, which also includes Belinda Balluku, as a member of the leadership and one of the most voted and supported people. Who in these 6 years led the ministry to achieve the ambitious objectives of our governing program.

I know that even here among us there are some who think that the exemplary electoral victories of Belinda and her teams stem from the power she had, this remains to be seen in other elections. The prosecution is free to investigate on any track. As prime minister, I am neither able nor allowed to hold any collaborator accountable ," Rama said.

At the end of his speech, Rama apologized to Balluk for rejecting her three requests for resignation.
