What are the biggest obstacles for businesses in Albania? - Hasalla: EU

Albania, as a small market, makes it challenging for some businesses to develop. There is no shortage of good ideas and investments, but for some sectors, the size of the market and the limited number of customers make survival and expansion difficult.

In an interview with Scan TV, employment expert Gertjana Hasalla emphasized that businesses related to luxury products, highly specialized services, or advanced technological projects often cannot function solely with the domestic market.

“Albania is not a bad market, but a small market. So, there are often businesses that have difficulty operating in such a small market as Albania. Examples of these businesses could be businesses that deal with luxury issues, or large architectural studios that build villas that cost a lot and have a very small market. Or let's say that the Albanian market itself would have to be supplemented by foreign buyers, otherwise it would be difficult for them to survive. Another example could be companies that deal with large logistics management, those that deal with the management of ports, or large airports. Compared to other countries, Albania has a very small market and it is difficult for such companies to find work in Albania and continue to survive. What should be noted in particular is that if a company of this level that deals with these things that are advanced or technology, biotechnology, needs to work either with foreign clients, or opens online. So it has a functioning many times larger than the domestic market in Albania.”

According to the expert, Albania's integration into the European Union could increase opportunities for these businesses. Opening up to the European market will create opportunities for Albanian companies to work with not only domestic but also international clients.

"Definitely yes, because in this case, Albania itself will also be open to the European market. This will require certain steps, it is not something that will be done immediately and it is not easy for the entire Albanian market to become part of the European market, of the trade business. But by taking these steps, it will be the best opportunity for Albanian companies to open up to their market and have clients not only Albanian, but also foreign clients. Some of them have definitely opened up to this market, and continue to work with foreign clients from Europe, or even America, Australia, etc., etc., but it will be many times easier for a lot, many times greater, of Albanian companies that work with these clients. Because what does this mean? There will definitely be obligations, European standards that companies will have to fulfill. When they fulfill them, it will be easier for them to enter the European market. To sell their products, to sell their services, or whatever they produce and do."

Among other things, he emphasized that the success of Albanian businesses does not depend only on the idea or investment, but also on the ability to open up to international markets and respect European standards.
