Large euro payments with AIPS reach peak - BoA: Around 25% more transactions in this system in the first two months of 2026

The year 2026 has started with a high activity of large-value bank payments in the country. Data published by the Bank of Albania show that during the first two months of the year, significant transaction volumes were realized, both in lek through the AIPS system and in euro through the AIPS-EURO system.
Regarding domestic payments in lek through the AIPS system, a total of about 24 thousand transactions were processed during January and February. The value of these payments was very high, reaching about 2.8 trillion lek in just two months. This shows the important role that this system plays in carrying out large financial transfers in the economy, mainly between banks, institutions and businesses.
If we look at the monthly performance, activity was highest in January, when over 1.5 trillion lek were transferred through the AIPS system, while in February the value of payments was around 1.3 trillion lek. So, the second month of the year marked a slight decrease in the volume of payments, but the level still remains very high and indicates a strong flow of funds in the economy since the beginning of the year.
Meanwhile, domestic euro payments through the AIPS-EURO system have started the year with growth. In the first two months of the year, around 66 thousand transactions were carried out, increasing by 25% compared to the previous year.
Compared to the same period a year ago, an expansion of activity in this system is noted. In January-February 2025, about 53 thousand payments were made through AIPS-EURO with a total value of 891 million euros. This means that at the beginning of 2026 the number of payments in euros has increased significantly, while their value has also increased.
The increase in the use of this system is mainly related to transactions between businesses and financial institutions, which are increasingly carried out in euros even within the country.
The AIPS system, administered by the Bank of Albania, is used for making large-value payments in lek within the country and is mainly used by banks, businesses and institutions. It is used to make important financial transfers, such as large payments by businesses to suppliers, payments by state institutions for public contracts, or settlement of obligations between banks.
Meanwhile, the AIPS-EURO system operates in the same way, but for euro payments made within Albania. This system is typically used for transactions between businesses operating with euro contracts, such as payments for imports, services or investments, as well as for euro transfers between banks on behalf of their clients.
