From house cleaning to early retirement - Unemployment/ 39 thousand discouraged, 60 thousand "busy" with the house
Although employment has increased in the first three months of the year, a portion of the population, which may seem small in percentage terms but is significant in numbers, is not looking for work. The reason? Some are discouraged, others are maintaining their homes, and those who are retiring early.
According to data from INSTAT, 2.5% of the inactive population in the labor market between the ages of 15 and 64 are not looking for work. Translated into figures, according to the 2023 Census, this amounts to about 39 thousand people who feel demotivated to enter the labor market.
But it's not just demotivation. Household chores also take up a significant portion of the workforce. INSTAT data shows that 17.2% of the economically inactive population of working age 15–64 is engaged in fulfilling household tasks.
If we cross-reference this data with the 2023 Census figures, it turns out that around 60 thousand individuals are busy with home maintenance and therefore are not included in the labor market.
Another category of inactive unemployed are those who "give up" work through early retirement, often at a still young age to contribute to the labor market.
