Lushnja does not "accept" ATMs! - BoS: Not only were they not added in

Almost every region of Albania has seen the installation of new ATMs over the past year. The capital, Tirana, leads with the largest number of ATMs, but also with the highest growth in 2024. This is because Tirana is home to the largest population and businesses, and consequently there is a greater need to perform ATM transactions. Meanwhile, in Lushnje, not only have no new ATMs been installed, but some of them have become out of order.

The number of ATMs distributed throughout the country has reached 1011, about 9% more than in 2023. The latest data from the Bank of Albania shows that 42 new ATMs have been added in Tirana, followed by the Shkodra region with about 32 in the past year.

In Korça, fewer ATMs have been set up than in any other region, while the Lushnja region is the only one with a decrease in the number of ATMs, with about 20 ATMs less than in 2023.

In total, Tirana has 586 ATMs, Gjirokastra comes second with 126, and then the Shkodra region with a total of 119. Meanwhile, the Korça, Elbasan, and Lushnja regions have the lowest number of ATMs in the country.

Most ATMs only offer cash withdrawal services, while there are still few ATMs that also serve for cash deposits or transfer orders. ATMs are operational even after official bank working hours, meaning they are functional 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year for cash withdrawals.

A larger number of ATMs means an increase in the financial inclusion of citizens and their access to banking services. However, the increase in ATMs offers more opportunities for individuals to withdraw physical cash, and consequently to use the latter more for making payments, instead of using a card for making electronic payments.
