Minister Salla inspects Kallasa: Two protective cascades for 850 ha of agricultural land
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Andis Salla, inspected today the protective works along the Kalasa River in the Finiq municipality, one of the most problematic rivers in the country due to high flows.
During the inspection, the minister was informed by engineers and local authorities that the two main protective cascades, that of Vana and that of Shelegar, have been completed for 5 months and are currently in the works warranty phase.
Engineers explained that the Kalasa River has a catchment area of about 22 thousand hectares and a maximum flow of 274 m³/s, which occurs on average once every 20 years. Due to the short distance from the mountainous terrain to the riverbed, the river's flows increase within 30 minutes during heavy rainfall, creating a high risk of erosion and flooding.
The works carried out aim to reduce the kinetic energy of water and protect the banks, which is of essential importance for the preservation of the embankments that protect around 850 hectares of agricultural land in the Finiqi area.
"These investments are vital for the protection of 850 hectares of agricultural land, because our duty as a ministry and as a government is to guarantee that every field is fully functional for farmers. We must ensure that the land is planted and cultivated without risk, without major problems and especially without flooding. Only in this way can we support local production and increase the sustainability of rural communities," declared Minister Salla.
Engineers confirmed that the designs for the remaining two cascades are ready.
