“No tax hike in 2026” - IMF: Remove exemptions. Malay: Review in the next 2 years

"This year too, the International Monetary Fund has recommended the removal of tax exemptions and incentives for businesses. But the Ministry of Finance has confirmed that there will be no change in taxes for 2026."
At the joint press conference of the International Monetary Fund, the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Albania, the IMF once again underlined the fact that fiscal exemptions must be eliminated.
"The fiscal package for 2026 does not foresee tax increases or tax changes. Tax rates will be reviewed for a period of 2 years, and those that will be in line with European Union legislation will change to align with EU requirements at the end of the accession process"
The IMF representative was also asked about the position regarding the fiscal peace package, which provides for the forgiveness of obligations for businesses.
"Regarding fiscal peace, we have noted that the Albanian government has made progress. We fear that some elements presented in the draft proposal for fiscal peace may undermine this progress in tax administration and create risks to compliance and fairness."
For his part, the Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, emphasized that fiscal consolidation has had its effects in reducing the budget deficit and further reducing public debt.
