“More than 48 hours of work per week” - Report: Albanian youth work

Albanian youth are the ones who work longer hours compared to other countries in the region and Europe. According to a Eurofound report, in the Western Balkan countries, over 30% of young people work long hours. Albania has the highest number of young people who work more than 48 hours a week. Specifically, 58% of them work longer than the official working hours. Also, our country has the lowest level of young people who do not take an hour off from work. Right behind us comes Kosovo, with almost half of young people working long hours.

Despite the fact that the number of young Albanians working more than 48 hours a week is higher than those from the region and Europe, the data from the report shows that Albanians, together with Macedonians, are still the ones who know how to better balance work with family and social commitments, compared to the European Union. According to statistics, 84% of young people in Albania do not find it difficult and are able to strike a proper balance between work and family or social commitments.

Also, although they work longer hours, most young people in our country are not forced to work quickly, or with tight deadlines. Even when it comes to temporary jobs, Albanian young people are almost four times less likely to engage in temporary work, i.e. for a short period of time, than young people in the EU.

On the other hand, Eurofound, in a survey conducted with young Albanians studying abroad, concludes that half do not want to return to work in Albania. 50% of them would return only after pursuing further education or working for a while in a foreign country. Although family ties or the desire to contribute to their country may be a reason for returning, they still choose to build their lives abroad.
