Over 248 thousand active businesses in Albania - The largest share is occupied by "natural persons", 13 thousand entities are foreign
The number of active businesses in Albania by the end of 2024 results in 248,737, which are distributed throughout the country.
As for their legal form, the largest share is occupied by entities registered as "natural persons" or self-employed, with 193,466 of them.
A Natural Person is an individual who seeks to exercise an independent commercial activity and is self-employed, alone and/or with unpaid family members and other employees. The figure shows the tendency of citizens to work for themselves, given that this category also has an exemption from taxes such as profit tax up to the threshold of 14 million lek and Value Added Tax up to the turnover of 10 million lek.
It seems that even the Constitutional Court's decision last year, which overturned the tax imposed by the government for this category, has caused the number of these entities to continue to be high.
In second place in terms of the weight they occupy in the total number of businesses operating in Albania are limited liability companies, with 52,881 registered.
There are also 443 joint-stock companies, 365 general partnerships, 129 are branches of a foreign company, 98 limited partnerships, 58 are simple partnerships, 33 are representative offices, 6 savings and credit societies, 4 cooperative societies, and 1 public limited company.
Regarding the registration by nationality, it results that 230,730 businesses are 100% Albanian-owned, 13,580 of them are 100% foreign-owned, 159 entities have joint Albanian and foreign ownership and 5 are of Albanian nationality but state-owned.
