What can a family do with 800 euros/month? - Study/ Only basic expenses for food and housing are covered!
One of the biggest challenges facing Albanian families is meeting daily expenses. Despite economic improvements in recent years, many families continue to struggle to cover basic needs such as food, housing, health and education. The structure of family expenses is influenced by a number of factors such as standard of living, place of residence and social policy, which often creates inequalities in families' ability to meet these expenses.
The recently published study by “Altax” analyzes whether a family with two minimum wages, which total 80,000 lek per month, can afford the average monthly expenses in Albania. Referring to the data of the Household Budget Survey (2023), the total monthly consumption expenses amount to 91,675 lek or 920 euros, which include:
• Expenses for food and non-alcoholic beverages 36,349 lek
• Expenses for housing, water, electricity and rent. 8,904 lekë
• Expenses for restaurants and hotels. 6,755 lekë.
The study compared income and expenses, showing that a family with two minimum wages, or 800 euros per month, can afford expenses related to:
• Food and non-alcoholic beverages 36,349 lek
• Housing, water, electricity and rent 8,904 lek
• Transportation and other living expenses 10,000 lek
Thus, the study concludes that expenses for food, housing, and transportation can reach around 55,000 lek or more.
In this case, 80,000 lek is enough to cover the main expenses of a family with two minimum wages (food, housing, and transportation expenses), but remains very limited for other categories of expenses, such as entertainment, clothing, and health expenses. It can also make it impossible to save or spend on health care and education, especially if additional support is needed (such as child support or opportunities for further education).
Average monthly household expenses
• Total monthly consumption expenses 91,675 lek
• Expenses for food and non-alcoholic beverages 36,349 lek
• Expenses for housing, water, electricity and rent 8,904 lek
• Expenses for restaurants and hotels. 6,755 lek
