Geothermal energy in Albania - AKBN: Untapped potential, here are the areas

Albania has potential for the development of geothermal energy, as the National Agency for Natural Resources has published a manual with areas where this resource can be used for electricity production.

According to the document, currently the thermal waters in our spas use geothermal resources for curative effects, while the use of the energy of these waters has not yet begun to be used, even though their potential offers such an opportunity.

According to AKBN, experimental energy assessments for the four largest sources: Elbasan Spa, Peshkopia, Kozani 8 well and Ishmi 1/b show that the total thermal water flow is 44.8 l/sec, the geothermal energy capacity is 6.64 MWt and the potential power to be installed is 7084 kW.

"These data are quite promising to start energy projects to exploit this renewable energy source," the AKBN document states. It is also noted that thermal springs and deep oil and gas exploration wells in our country are located in three areas: Kruja, Ardenica and Peshkopia.

The Kruja geothermal area is the largest, about 180 km long and 4-5 km wide. It begins on the Adriatic coast, north of Cape Rodon, continues with the structure of Ishmi, Kozan north of Elbasan, Llixha in Elbasan, Holta in Gramsh, Bënjë in Përmet, the steam on Mount Postenan in Leskovik and the Sarandaporos River near the Albanian-Greek border.

The Ardenica geothermal area is located in the Myzeqe region, while the Peshkopia geothermal area is located in northeastern Albania. More specifically, two kilometers east of Peshkopia, near the Banja stream where four springs are located next to each other.
